At some point in our trip, we came across a small-ish furniture store tucked in around the other stores in the mall and decided to walk in and check it out. The store's name was LoveSac, and we quickly saw what was so awesome about the "Sactionals" style furniture -- you can rearrange them into countless different formations!
On top of that, the covers on the furniture are 100% changeable and washable. So if we felt like having a leather couch one year and a red couch the next, we could do it a lot more cheaply than buying a whole other brand new piece of furniture -- pretty cool! You can check out the cover selection here.
We both loved the concept, especially since we have been (and will continue to be) moving so much over the course of Mr. L's relationship with the military. Not only is it easier to move than a traditional couch, we can set it up to fit whatever room we decide to put it in inside each new home. It certainly didn't hurt that the Sactional arrangements we sat on were pretty dang comfy too!
Flash forward to the beginning of summer 2013: our current couch had been around for a long time (well before we got married and into Mr. L's bachelor years) and was showing a bit of wear, and we'd been told time and time again (in particular by moving companies) that it was a pretty dang big piece of furniture. After a few weeks of thinking on the situation, we decided to take the plunge, donate our old couch, and order a Sactional 5 Series arrangement from Lovesac (4 bases, 5 sides total -- specifically this set, but it was on sale and had an extra side thrown in for free).
I'm not going to lie, it took a long time for our furniture to get here. The shipping part was actually pretty fast (and by the way, shipping is free in the continental U.S., although sadly not for us), but unfortunately, the covers that we'd chosen, Chocolate Velvish, were on back-order, so it ended up being a couple extra months before the furniture could even be shipped to us. We knew that going in though, so we waited patiently for our new Sactional to arrive.
Finally, UPS delivered it one afternoon, and we opened a couple of the boxes to check out our purchase (we weren't putting it together yet because we still needed to move our old couch out). What we saw in the boxes wasn't quite what we were expecting though, unfortunately. Instead of the Chocolate Velvish covers, we'd received boxes full of the Bidness Grey Tweed color. While the grey is a lovely color, it wasn't what we ordered and it definitely did not go with the rest of our living room decor.
When we originally ordered the Sactional, we'd received an email from the client relations manager at LoveSac named Ellie who told us to contact her if we ever needed anything, so I shot her a quick little email that night to let her know what was up. Not only did she offer to send the correct covers to us free of charge, but she said we could go ahead and keep the entire Bidness Grey Tweed set on top of it!
Needless to say, we were pretty floored since the cover sets aren't cheap. That level of customer service was outstanding, and we really appreciated the efforts Ellie made to keep us informed (I'd sent her lots of emails throughout the entire waiting, shipping, and ordering the new covers process). She is awesome!
While we waited for our new covers to come in, we decided to go ahead and set up the Sactional with the grey covers to make sure everything worked fine. And I'm going to be completely honest -- setting this couch up was HARD. In the showroom, the pieces fit pretty effortlessly together, but it wasn't until we were setting ours up that we realized it was because those pieces were all nice and broken in after months or possibly years of being arranged and rearranged. Ours was brand spankin' new from the factory, and there were times we had to walk away and literally recovery our energy after trying to force some pieces together (it probably didn't help that we were both sick, but it was seriously TOUGH). It can be overall very frustrating, especially when two pieces are SO CLOSE to fitting together but just won't seem to slide in and behave, but we stuck with it and managed to get that daggum thing set up!

After another couple of weeks, our new covers came in, but we were definitely not excited to re-cover the Sactional again since it would involve essentially taking apart the whole couch (ugh) so we put it off for a while, haha. We also noticed that the covers sent to us this time weren't called Chocolate Velvish, but Rhinoplush instead, so we suspect that there may have been a cover mix-up in the reorder since they have another fabric called Rhinoplush. However, the covers felt perfectly fine to us and the color was exactly what we wanted, so we were fine with keeping them.

After another week or so of staring at the new covers and the old covers, we finally got fed up and just went with it! It took a couple of hours of good, solid effort (and it was actually slightly easier than the first time, giving us hope that it'll get progressively easier each time it's reassembled) but it was actually worth it in the end. We were absolutely reassured that the new covers were the covers for us. They're so soft and almost velvety smooth, and they even made the couch much more comfortable to us to sit on. I could cuddle with the cushions on that Sactional all day long! We're in the process of finding some nice throw pillows to go with the Sactional (the smaller ones pictured will probably get recovered eventually, and I'm still feeling out the bigger ones), so hopefully we'll get it looking super snazzy soon!
And, of course, our family wouldn't be completely 100% happy with the purchase if the dogs didn't love it too. Thankfully, they gave it their seal of approval immediately!

Have you ever heard of LoveSac before? What do you think of the concept?
UPDATE: At this point in our period of LoveSac ownership (mid-October 2013), we've assembled this couch for a total of 3 times, the last time being when we moved in the new house. For that assembly, Mr. L and a friend were able to put it together super easily and in no time at all which was a great comfort to us. Unfortunately you still have to suffer through the first couple of assemblies, but we at least know now it will never be as bad as the first time again!
Disclaimer: This post consists entirely of my own thoughts and opinions. No one at Lovesac encouraged me to write it or offered compensation for a post. I'm sure they don't even know I exist aside from their wonderful client relations manager Ellie, of course! :)
LoveSac is cool. In highschool I didn't have a regular bed. My father purchased their second to largest "bean bag" like loveSac for me to sleep on. It was amazing and I've missed it for many hears. They do get better over time, but for me I had to regularly flip it to keep it fluffy and soft or after time it would just stay conformed yo my outline. Haha.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to try out one of the Sacs! I don't think we actually sat on one in the store we visited (but it has been like two years so I could be wrong). They look like they'd be ridiculously comfortable!
DeleteI'm considering buying a Sactional for the sitting area of our master bedroom and if we love it we'd consider it for our family room. I live right near a store in a tax-free state, so I'd be saving on delivery, but the prices look unreasonably high online. The retail prices are almost double what I'd expect to pay for this type of furniture. I'm going to to go the store to check it out, but I don't think I'm willing to spend $2000+ on a tiny sectional for two people. Perhaps there are some better deals in the store.
ReplyDeleteHi Keeley! I'm so sorry it's taken me this long to get back to you. I've been on vacation on the mainland visiting family! The prices of the LoveSac furniture can definitely be high, so my advice would be to keep an eye out for sales that they run throughout the year (which is how we bought our pieces). Otherwise it's obviously whatever you and your budget are comfortable with spending. Good luck on your decision!
DeleteThanks for this review. My wife and I are desperately needing a new couch and have been on the fence about getting a LoveSac Sactional. We think they are awesome, but I have seen mixed reviews. Your review was detailed enough, I think we know what we are getting into. Now just to wait for those deals... Or find a used one and get new covers.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad my review was able to help you out, Conrad! Good luck with your search, and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
DeleteThanks for the review! We are purchasing this furniture for our family room. We have 2 kids and 2 pets. I sure hope it can take a beating!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I could help! Good luck with your purchase, and if you have any questions, especially about assembly, I'm happy to help :)
DeleteWould you recommend against or for buying a used sactional. We know someone who is willing to sell it for 50% off since they didn't like it. It is 1 year old and in good condition. We would just have to like seawater rhinoplush.
ReplyDeleteI don't really see why it wouldn't be okay as long as the Sactional is in good condition. I would double check about any warranty transfer options just to be on the safe side though! :)
DeleteHow has it held up I m seriously considering getting one but the 3000 price tag for a love seat ses steep
ReplyDeleteHi Breanne! Thanks for commenting :) It's held up perfectly for us so far! We've got it set up in the "movie lounger" formation in our living room right now. It's survived moving from Hawaii to Alabama to Virginia, probably because we were able to take it apart and transport it very easily.
DeleteAnd honestly...that price tag is very expensive. Look for deals!! We caught it on a sale and got a free side thrown in so we'd be able to create the sectional look pictured above. Another option might be to scour Craigslist/etc. for used Lovesacs, although I fear they're not that common depending on your area.
Good luck with your decision! :)
Thank you for your review. My husband and I are seriously considering a love sac. How has it held up?
ReplyDeleteHi Cindy!
DeleteThe Lovesac has actually held up pretty well considering it's been moved about four times so far now! We still have it set up in our living room in the "movie lounger" formation and it's still very comfy. My SIL even preferred to sleep on it both times she's visited us (in Hawaii and Virginia), so I guess that's another good review in and of itself!
It may change positions and go into another room now that we're finally in a home we've purchased, but we're still mulling over that. Right now we're just thankful of having the option of breaking it up and using it as different kinds of furniture or keeping it just like it is :)
Thanks so much for commenting!
I own a 5-series sactional, and although I love the product... their website, shipping and customer service is lacking. On one occasion I was lucky enough to be helped by Ellie, and on another occasion they just refunded my money after I sent back the wrong covers and they never sent me the correct ones or honored the sale price.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I love my sactional, I'll think long and hard before ordering from lovesac again because of the hassle involved.
I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience, Christine! It has been over three years since we interacted with the company, so it stinks to hear that it may have gone a bit downhill from there. I hope you enjoy your sactional though!
DeleteIs the couch still comfortable after all these years? I find a ton of reviews tearing the customer service apart but none about the actual break in of the couch. What are your thoughts?
ReplyDeleteSame as the comment above, just wondering if you have thoughts about the longevity of the sofa. Best!
ReplyDeleteHi Amy! We actually no longer own this Sactional but instead sold it to a friend last year. But we do visit them and it's holding up strong! The covers haven't torn or messed up and everything is still in solid shape, just like when we owned it. So I'd say it's doing pretty good at almost six years old at least!
DeleteHi Erica, was there anything that prompted you to sell your sectional? We are very close to purchasing one and it's a large investment for our family, but hesitate to think it might not be a lifetime purchase.
ReplyDeleteHi Joanna! Our friends basically made us an offer we couldn't refuse haha. But we initially intended to keep it as a rec room/basement/movie room couch down the road, and ended up purchasing a house with neither of those things! We didn't quite have the room to keep it set up in the house, so when our friends made the offer, we jumped on it.
DeleteBut to be a little more specific, the reason why it wasn't our main couch was because I wanted a living room set that was much softer than the Sactional. Sactional arms are hard and angular, and you can't rest your head on them comfortably if you lay down. If we would have had the room, we would have kept it, but we didn't mind passing it on to our friends for them to enjoy.
In which country is this sofa available?
ReplyDeleteIt's available in the U.S.
DeleteHorrible horrible concept. I’m old and have never paid so much for a couch I had to completely build. The covers do NOT “just slide on”! I have raw knuckles after hours of doing this and completed only half so far. I asked at store for any way to get help and was told “no, it’s simple, just read box or watch video”. I’ve done both countless times. I’m seriously wondering if I have wrong size covers or something. If I ever get them all on they will never be taken off. I’d rather throw the whole darn thing out than go thru this again. Oh and I just bought the little wood set to help conceptualize the assembly as I found it by accident online when I was looking for ANY help here. I asked at store about the little wooden set and was told they cannot be purchased. AND I spent $10K on this stupid couch so don’t you think the little wooden set should just come with it? Anyway I know I’m in the frustrating part of it and maybe a year from now I’ll be chill but right now I will never recommend this to anyone and will never buy another. When I spend this kind of money on a simple cloth couch I expect it to be great and not something I need therapy to recover.
