DIY: Yarn Pom Pom Wreath

In order to make our new house more of a home, I wanted to inject a little Christmas spirit into the atmosphere.  While browsing Pinterest for decoration ideas, I came across this lovely wreath made out of yarn balls:

I loved the rustic, silvery colors; it reminded me so much of snow and winter, something we don't exactly have in this part of the world =)  So I decided to attempt to make my own!

I went with a friend to the local craft store and filled my basket with supplies.  After arriving back at home, I set out to tackle the task at hand.  I was actually doing pretty well -- I'd wrapped quite a few styrofoam balls with yarn in beautiful shades of gray, white, and blue.  But then it started to go downhill.  Apparently my hot glue absolutely sucked at making sure the balls stayed on the tubing I was using for the wreath form.  I didn't want to go and purchase another gun or another kind of glue, so I improvised.

I looked online again and came across a tutorial on how to make pom poms.  I instantly loved it, and began making lots of little pom pom balls for my wreath.

Here are the directions I used to make my pom poms:

1.  Use two pieces of cardboard that are the same length (width doesn't really matter).  My two pieces are about two inches long apiece.

Don't forget to accept any help you can get, especially from sleeping pets.

2.  Take your yarn and wrap it length-wise around your cardboard pieces.

3.  Keep wrapping until you have a good bunch of yarn on your hands (play around with your amount of yarn and length of your cardboard to get the size pom pom you desire).

4.  Take another piece of string and tie off one end of the cardboard.

5.  Now cut the non-tied end of the bunch with a sharp pair of scissors.

6.  Take another piece of yarn and tie over your first knot to make the bunch more secure.  Then trim your pom to give it a better shape.

7.  Now it's time to start hot gluing!  And by the way, my wreath form is insulated pipe tubing purchased from Home Depot.  I wrapped it in duct tape originally thinking that would help the yarn-wrapped styrofoam balls attach more easily, so you don't have to wrap it in duct tape if you don't want to!

8.  Once you've glued all of your poms onto your wreath, add some embellishments.  I chose these glittery ornaments I found in packs at Target.  I also used a blue ornament of the same kind to hang in the middle of my wreath.

9.  Hang up your wreath on your door or a wall or anywhere really, and then sit back and admire your work!

Hope you enjoyed the tutorial -- Happy Holidays, everyone!

  1. Thank you! I've always loved that color combination, especially with the bright blues. Just screams winter to me =)
